Words of Radiance
Made my way through another Sanderson doorstop. Enjoyed it, found it mostly compelling, but a bit of a slog at times. I'm confident this book could be half the length and not leave out anything. And with some careful editing get it down to one third the size. But that's not Sanderson's thing, so here we are.
I liked the grand epic story that's (very slowly) being unfolded. The interaction between feudal politics, religion, prophecy, grand spirits, history, geography.. There's something very big and elaborate. I don't know that Sanderson is smart enough to have it all sketched out ahead of time with clarity, but he is deft at keeping it going and self-consistent and adding new interesting bits over time. It's a remarkable thing to set out about a 10,000 page epic fantasy project and so far, deliver with quality.
I think I'm probably in for the next book but I may let it go awhile.
