The Memory Librarian: And Other Stories of Dirty Computer
I managed to finish it but regret having ever started. This book really did not work for me. I found it incoherent and tedious. It's a bit odd as a collection of stories and many of the individual stories are poorly structured. There's some good professional writing at times but as a whole it just did not work for me.
I was primed to like this book! I find Janelle Monáe compelling, I like afrofuturism as a genre, I was ready for something new. I enjoyed the videos for Dirty Computer and even watched the whole "emotion picture" (itself also tedious and poorly structured, although the individual videos are great.) But I just didn't ever get engaged with any of the stories here. Baffled at this as a book.
Quite possible I just missed the good in this book entirely. Perhaps I'm too old or too far removed culturally to get it. I did honestly try.
