The Loves of My Life: A Sex Memoir
Oh I wish I liked this book better. At its best the book is pure White, his frank, compassionate, and insightful view into gay sex and the gay people he knows. And such lovely turns of phrase, see my highlights for some choice quotes
his performance was like that of a firefly toward the end of its luminescence, pulsing more and more feebly in your hand.
Unfortunately the book is kind of a mess and needs serious editing for structure. Some of the chapters are great, I particularly liked Pedro. Others are unfocussed or simply don't belong. White has written this kind of book before, many times, and the others I've read have been better. This one is fun to catch up on his thoughts in his 80s. And sadly this may be his last book although there's rumors he was working on at least another novel.
White means a lot to me as an author. I did enjoy this book. But I'd not recommend it as anyone's first White read, or even their third. Start with his autofiction trilogy.
