The Consuming Fire
Enjoyed this! This one took three days to read instead of two, so maybe I'm slowing down a bit. Immediately will read the third one. Glad to be reading these together; honestly I'd rather read them all as one big novel, maybe edited to 3/4 the length. But they work OK as three standalones.
I was worried this second book was out of ideas, was thinking the world he built felt awfully small and the story was sort of spinning in circles. Then he introduces some New Science Facts into the story as well as some new groups of people. That made the story much more interesting. Was not enthralled by the primary plot that drove this novel but it was good enough and came to a delicious conclusion in the final chapter.
Filing this firmly in the "entertaining fiction" bin. It's nothing near as grand as Broken Earth, nor even as complex and full of ideas as The Expanse. But it's very enjoyable fiction with some well thought out ideas.
