Well that was unexpectedly great. The book really ramps up. It starts off pretty silly and light, an extension of the first book. And that's a good thing; the writing is great, it's a fun gay story, I had a good time.

Then the book got all serious! Not in a bad way, just the development of Oliver as a character and his relationship with Lucien got a lot more complex and interesting than I was expecting. Oliver's choices in Part 4 of the book were quite moving and meaningful. And then Part 5.. not only does it subvert a lot of expectations for the genre but it manages to both develop characters in a meaningful way and make some insightful and novel commentary about the role of gay people in society. Really deft writing.
