Gender Queer: A Memoir
Enjoyed this book for its intense personal honesty about a difficult and fraught topic. The graphic art style works great here, it defuses some of the difficult emotions to have beautiful and cute art. Great colors too.
I'll be honest, the varying forms of gender expression in the current era sometimes baffle me. I have enough trans friends that simple transgender identity doesn't seem surprising anymore but there's a zillion genderqueer variants I don't really understand. Doubly so because my own experience is pretty firmly cis-male (with some gender bending for fun occasionally). So I really appreciated the author so forthrightly putting out eir experiences and explaining what it feels like to em in their own gender identity.
And a special thank you for the section on asking people to use eir pronouns. I find constructions like the Spivak pronouns clumsy and it was nice to see the author acknowledging that difficulty and explaining why it is important to em to ask.
I gather from wikipedia that some awful people have declared this book as obscene and inappropriate for teenagers. Absolute nonsense and I hope kids find their way to read this book when they're the age to understand or maybe need it.
