It's a well written story. Very tightly planned, every character and scene has a purpose, some revealed only later as answers to mysteries. And an interesting narrative both of actual peril for a narrator we empathize with and an adaptation of Caribbean religioun ideas into a fantasy story. It's a good book!

But I wish I enjoyed it more. It's pretty far removed from my language and culture. And while normally I relish the chance to read something well written from a different perspective than mine, this time it didn't click. Maybe I read it at the wrong time or in the wrong mood. But I didn't really personally connect to the characters or the story. I accept that's a failing of my imagination. I think the book is written from an important perspective and I'm glad to see it published and read. It just didn't quite grab me.
