Genuinely not sure why I finished this book except I'd read the two and didn't realize how.. thin the story was here until I got halfway through the third one. I dunno, I had the same complaint about the second book and maybe the first. They're such small stories, focussed on Breq and a couple of other people. The stakes feel very low for a space opera. So does the action. Which is weird because what actually happens with the AIs is fairly monumental, but doesn't feel that way.

What does work is the humanistic writing, the multifaceted insights into the few characters and their personal relationships.
