  1. Portugal vacation

  2. Lisboa

  4. Got a Portuguese SIM for my phone. $16 for 3GB. Compare $750 for 3GB with my Verizon plan. Sure wish iPhones supported having two SIM cards.
  5. Don't have room for two parallel funicular tracks with cable? Overlap them. https://t.co/lO5WVTMqo4

  6. Lisbon: for when you want both Cristo Redentor and the Golden Gate Bridge in the same city. https://t.co/ZpTwpWg2vZ

  7. Ken arranged for us a special night of music at the Clube de Fado in Lisbon. We sat right next to the musicians and it was magic. pic.twitter.com/QvJp9tx3ls
  8. Misc Lisbon snaps. Tile, facades, cobblestones, fonts. pic.twitter.com/TixJltaa5g
  9. As you can see, I'm really excited by the painted tile in Lisbon. Remarkable local art / craft. Excellent museum:  http://www.museudoazulejo.pt/
  10. I love the way I interact with cities mediated through my iPhone. Camera, maps, Wikipedia, texting, all on the hoof. Age of wonders. https://t.co/UfLCxL3Pmt

  11. And some details of decorations at the National Palace of Sintra. pic.twitter.com/2ByevhPbel
  12. Ken practicing his skill filetting a sole. In Ericeira, oceanside pick-your-fish grill joint. Super simple, fresh. pic.twitter.com/sV8z4sHRMq
  13. The most distinctive Portugese food I've had so far is Farinheira: smoked sausage made from pork fat and flour.  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farinheira
  14. No meat, just flour. It's like bread soaked in bacon fat. Or Thanksgiving turkey stuffing.
  15. Obidos

  16. Our hotel room for tonight. The view from the arrow slits is a bit restricted but it is expansive from the battlements. pic.twitter.com/ePWRXQvJZq
  17. No room for a normal steep staircase? Cut the stairs on the diagonal and double them up. (Our hotel room). pic.twitter.com/XtyzWtuuDY
  18. Some photos from the monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha. pic.twitter.com/zMbEFnVPyn
  19. Three Monasteries today: Alcabaça (Cistercian), Batalha (Dominican), and the Mosterio do Leitão (suckling pig). The last was a restaurant.
  20. A friend tells me these stairs are called "alternating tread" (many Google results). If it's not clear; it relies on left and right feet.
  21. Aveiro, a pretty little coastal harbour town with canals and tiled houses. Had a good hambuerger. pic.twitter.com/rigjH2WLzU
  22. Porto

  23. Guys, guys, Porto is magical. Really liking this town. pic.twitter.com/ASQAWByg2c
  24. A few shots from Oporto. So much to show trying to keep it to 4 photos. pic.twitter.com/pacHQ98ulE
  25. Ken and me in Portugal

  26. Tile from the cloister in the Cathedral of Porto (Sè). Starting to take these for granted! pic.twitter.com/i8FCEzxE9G
  27. Portugese train car reserved for wheelchairs, prams, and surfboards. 🏄 https://t.co/XvA0FdpYzX

  28. Enjoying a Francesinha at Cantina 35. A Porto hot sandwich, various meats with a beer sauce. Sort of burrito status.  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francesinha
  29. And some street art in Oporto, mostly from Hazul. pic.twitter.com/IsNmJB9JTK
  30. Many thanks to fabulous tourist guide writer @MinkaGuides for identifying the Porto penis street artist as GodMess.  https://www.facebook.com/godmessbook/
  31. Coimbra

  32. Also some shots from Buçaco, a national park / palace / hotel / former convent. pic.twitter.com/ERzElxrJ1y
  33. At the University of Coimbra. Across the central square they paved the path between every pair of doors. pic.twitter.com/1aaKsGujya
  34. Some tourist snaps of Coimbra. University, science museum, our Lady of the good death. pic.twitter.com/wUkVc2c23D
  35. Every Portuguese hotel I've been in has had perfectly working WiFi+Internet. The coffee makers in the rooms, not so much.
  36. Evora

  37. Driving the A13 from Coimbra to Tomar. May be the best built highway we've ever seen. Long high bridges over valleys.
  38. After visiting so many convents and monasteries I finally get to spend the night in one. Foreground (not my photo) https://t.co/VZnVv8g1Ex https://t.co/IF0mbaOCpo

  39. Some snaps from my lovely convent hotel in Evora. The chapel is amazing: blur marble to match blue tile. St Jerome is featured. pic.twitter.com/3XcDHwcOLB
  40. And more photos from around Evora. The church of São Francisco is remarkably sumptuous. pic.twitter.com/NT9IIUkksf
  41. Return

  42. Beginning of the long day. With any luck I'll be home in ~17 hours. Folks still going to bed from the bars in the Bairro Alto.
  43. Boy Virgin Atlantic does not make it easy to connect to their flights. But I'm in the seat and this isn't United so I feel fairly secure.
  44. Glad to be back home. Portugal was great. A week in Lisbon + Porto highly recommended. Also enjoyed sites in smaller places, more to come.
